How do you define self-care?
We live in a world where everyone wants to give us answers on just about everything including the ‘best’ self-care tips. We see ads on the internet and interesting Facebook Live videos from our favorite influencers with their secrets to success and happiness. We hear suggestions for pampering ourselves on our favorite podcasts and vlogs. Heck, even our mother-in-laws want to tell us what is best for us.
… but do these suggestions work for you?
I found myself asking this question one day. After a couple heavy work weeks and lots of busyness on the weekends, I had some time to myself. Here was an opportunity to do my own self-care, and I just sat there not really sure what to do with myself. A well-meaning friend told me I needed to learn some self-care. I was not sure what that meant for me?
One friend felt getting a massage, a mani-pedi, and going out for lunch was the perfect refresher. Another friend swears by the luxury of taking a long luxurious bubble bath with lots of candles and quiet music. Some others feel that taking a hike in the mountains is the best way to recharge.
my body and my spirit needed.
It was time to take a personal inventory. What were the activities that made me happy, relaxed, at peace in my little spot of the world? What did I like to do for fun? Years ago, when my journey of self-discovery was first beginning, I could not even tell you what color I liked best. I was so caught up in taking care of others that I stopped thinking about who I was.
Don’t we often find ourselves in this place? Do you have these same questions? Do you know what your favorite color is? What is your most precious way to spend your time? This summer when you find those quiet moments … ask yourself…
What does self-care mean to you?
I encourage you to take some time this season and rediscover what self-care is for you. How can you best nurture yourself? And then, take action and treat yourself with the self-care routine that means the most to you.
For me…I think I will sit in my backyard and listen to the birds sing. It does not get much better than that for me.
